Let’s get this post about the Canary Islands out of the way

Many months ago, in early autumn, we were afraid of the winter.  Self-deprecating Norwegians were worried about us — surely, we would find Trondheim cold, dark, wet, and depressing, and we would absolutely need to get away in February to somewhere warm and sunny.  This turned out to not be true; we’re loving the winter, and don’t feel any real longing for anything else, yet.  However, we had followed their advice many months ago, and booked a weekend in the Canary Islands.  The trip was, of course, utterly delightful, sunny, warm, and indulgent, but it wasn’t something we really needed.  Join me, then, as I mail in this post, chronologically getting it out of the way for some really bananas stuff we’ve done since.

The Canary Islands were about 65 degrees in the shade while we were there (the sun made it quite a bit warmer), which was a pretty huge adjustment from Trondheim (a scene from packing — Allison: I’ve got a sweater and a jacket, should I pack a fleece, too? Me: You have become afraid of the world.)  Changing into shorts for the first time since May really was pretty wonderful.

The Canary Islands feature a lot of cliffs, which now have resorts built into them.  This allows many of the rooms to have ocean views, including our own.

Our resort was “all inclusive,” meaning we were issued a wristband, giving us free access to the bar and restaurants throughout the resort.  This made it a bit of a land cruise, where we pulled up to the trough three times a day, to eat more than we meant to.

Also like on a cruise, each night had some entertainment, with some acrobats, or musicians, or something.

As you can tell, the average clientele was, um, older (and, on the pool deck, nakeder), but we had a good time in our own company.  We’d go to the gym, or walk along the ocean, or do some reading.  It was nice!

I have now written the required post about the Canary Islands.  Stay tuned for the next posts about our nuts trip to Svalbard!

  1. It looks nice but I bet the breakfasts you enjoyed couldn’t hold a candle to a Scandinavian breakfast!
